Saving the Juanita Woodlands
The Friends of Juanita Woodlands and its parent organization, the Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance, have worked with King County and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to save the Woodlands for future generations. Please browse this site to learn more about what has been done and what you can do to save this precious urban forest.
HELP Juanita Woodlands
Saturday July 15th !!! It’s time again to
give Mother Nature a helping hand in the Woodlands!Volunteers are needed as usual to pull up or chop down the ivy vines that are running wild. But this time we also need to give a drink to the cedar and fir saplings that volunteers planted back in December. These new trees are faring remarkably well, but many are beginning to look awfully thirsty. We can ease them through the summer heat by setting out an ad hoc irrigation system, consisting of water-filled plastic jugs (hand-selected from Starbuck’s dumpsters – but pre-rinsed!) that we’ll perforate with safety pins and place next to the trees.
Details:
Where – We’ll meet in front of the Fire Station at the intersection of Juanita Drive and Holmes Point Drive, across from Plaza Garcia
When – From 9:00am to 11:00am Saturday July 15th
What to bring – If you want to tackle the ivy, be sure to bring gloves and a pruning saw because we have some pretty big vines to cut. Some of these are in the ravine, so sturdy shoes and long pants and a long sleeved shirt would be a good idea as well. If ivy’s not your thing, all you need to bring is – you! We’ve got the jugs, which we can fill at the fire station and then carry into the Woodlands.
We’ll have coffee and water on hand in case you get thirsty. This is a great way to keep the Woodlands healthy and to find out what’s in store for the Woodlands over the next year! We look forward to seeing you next Saturday.
