About the Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance

About Us:

The Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance (DCNA), has been working since 1996 with the intent of preserving this public property, now known as Juanita Woodlands. In spring of 2001 the situation took on a new form of urgency when the alliance learned that the property would be sold.

Our goal is to acquire the entire 40 acres in order to establish an urban woodland preserve and natural space for conservation of wildlife habitat and the Lake Washington watershed. Preserving the Juanita Woodlands will present future generations an opportunity to experience the original environment of what has become a densely populated urban area.

An active group of volunteers meet monthly to plan and implement programs to raise the funds needed to purchase the woodlands. Please join us the first Saturday of each month. Or, email info@juanitawoodlands.org to help us save this precious gem.

The Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance is a neighborhood association composed entirely of volunteers. You can learn more about some of our past successes in protecting and improving our natural resources in this PDF document.

The Save the Juanita Woodlands team is a DCNA project focused on saving the Juanita Woodlands for future generations.

Here is what others have said about the DCNA and the Juanita Woodlands project:

“So, we have another "insurmountable" task in front of us! And, once again, I believe we will ultimately see the success of our efforts as we work to ensure that a unique and valuable parcel of trees, natural vegetation, creeks and trails is preserved for the enjoyment of the citizens of King County. I have little doubt that DCNA will utilize innovative and enterprising community activism to ensure the success of our efforts to preserve the DNR 40 acre property for the present and for generations to come. Our partnerships are in place. The commitment is there. The track record is there to build upon. How can we fail?”

Jane Hague, Councilmember
King County Council, District 11

“As a member of Congress representing this area, I have seen these 40 acres of trees, natural vegetation, creeks and trails and know well how unique and valuable this parcel is in such a dense area along Lake Washington’s shores. There are many concerned parties involved in this issue. The City of Kirkland is exploring this area as a Potential Annexation Area and is actively facilitating this discussion. The King County Council has set aside $500,000 in the 2002 budget for purchase of this land. Washington State’s legislators and federal Members of Congress are working to find creative solutions to keep this land as open space. These 40 acres have made partners of local community members and city, county, state and federal officials, all of whom are committed to finding the available options to acquire this land. With this kind of partnership, this 40-acre parcel could also serve as a model for similar urban transition land issues across the state.”

Jay Inslee
Member of Congress

Many people have diligently worked together to preserve this natural area, and I believe they should be given an opportunity to work with DNR to reach a mutually acceptable solution. The people involved in this issue have worked hard, have a valid concern, and deserve to be heard. I am committed to do whatever I can as a state representative to help.”

Jeanne Edwards
State Representative

The Denny Creek Neighborhood Alliance's work to preserve the Juanita Woodlands is rooted in great vision and stung community spirit. The Woodlands are a big part of the surrounding neighborhood's unique northwest character. The Alliance's leadership demonstrates that local communities can work positively and meaningfully to preserve a community's cherished open space. "
